Actually, if you pay attention, you will hear smart people using that made up word. It's just a trap that some people who aren't particular about their grammar will fall into.

I actually have before, and I told them it's not a real word, and they're like "yeah it is!" and i'm like "lol...you keep thinking that..."

Definition of IRREGARDLESS

nonstandard : regardless
Usage Discussion of IRREGARDLESS

Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread
use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently
repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still
used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation
has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

umm.. as it says, it's not acceptable. It's poor grammar. It's a double negative and if you use it, you are not looking to swift. :P

For a more humorous viewpoint... http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... regardless

Irregardless is an informal term meaning regardless or irrespective, which has caused controversy since it first appeared in the early twentieth century. Most dictionaries list it as "incorrect" or "nonstandard".

Not really.. it isn't acceptable. It's like saying "ain't" is a word... ok it's a word, just not a word anyone with a brain would say is proper. But let me put it this way... don't use "irregardless" if you want to sound like you have a clue. ;)
