So my sister had the bright idea of turning my computer on, to play sims, while I was out, during a thunderstorm. Well now my PC won't start. So I'm still a nub is PCs, I would need help knowing what went? Would it be my mobo or PSU? How would I check. My power bar is still working, so it's not that that went.

Symptoms:
-when I press the power button, nothing at all happens.
-I think I remember my mobo having a light on even if my PC was off, but now it's not on.

Help?

Try unplugging your PC.. letting it sit for 1 minute, then plug it back in and try to turn it on.

I've let it sit for 15 minutes now, plugged it back and still nothing.

Try taking the watch battery on the motherboard out for a bit then put it back in.

Do case fans or anything come on?

simple little thing if you have a psu sitting around or one that can be hooked up to the mobo and just the mobo do so and unplug the one inside the case hook up the 24pin connector and push the power button if nothing comes on you might have a dead battery, bad cable so swap out for another power cable or you have a dead computer but not the whole thing luckily just the main components mobo, cpu.
if the psu swap doesnt work do one other thing pull mobo out of tower put it on cardboard or static free item that wont ground out have 1 ram stick and 1 gpu with the psu that is 100 working hooked up and than take a screw driver and jump the pins that are required to start the computer it will be in your mobo handbook if it starts there and not the case you have a grounding issue.

nothing comes on. no lights, no fans, nothing. ill go try the battery.

sounds like a fried PSU

thats what i am thinking its a fried psu but best to have all the next steps setup to follow.

It's most likely the PSU, but make sure you also test the power outlet and check the breaker.

I don't think I'll ba able to do anything until Tuesday. My dads no keen on me taking out the other computer's PSU. I think we'll take it to a PC store, and get it fixed there, but ships are closed on Monday.

The power outlet is fine, my screen and my PC is connected to the same power bar, and my screen still works.

PC repair shops are as bad as auto mechanics for raping you of your money. If you or your dad can fix it yourself (which you most likely can), you should. Taking out a PSU is as easy as removing four screws and unplugging the cables. From there it just slides (or drops) right out.

Yeah really. You'll wind up paying hundreds of dollars for the PC repair service for a part that costs much less, depending on what PSU you get. If it's a higher wattage one, then you'll be paying $150+ plus the service from the repair guy. Not worth it.

But I don't know what the problem is. I don't want to end up buying another PSU if my mobo fried.

Is there anything I can check with a voltmeter or something?
